Masterful character sketch

An old wealthy man reflects upon his ruthless rise to the top as he plots a terrible crime. The author's vast powers of description create a vivid portrait not only of the deeply flawed protagonist, but of the time in which he lived. The portrait is made all the more powerful by the dark hints that the old man is losing his grip on reality and collapsing into senility. It ends upon a final note of almost infinite pain as he suddenly comes to grip with the horror of what he has done.
