The Messenger , published monthly from 1917 until 1928, was a socialist and literary magazine. Like The Crisis and Opportunity , it was one of the first national periodicals by-and-for African Americans. In the pages of this invaluable Harem Renaissance resource are articles, essays, short stories, poems, plays, and visual art by legendary Harlem Renaissance artists. The cover art for this September 1926 issue, "The Dawn of a New Day," is by Ted Carroll. Included in the contents are "The Eatonville Anthology," a short story by Zora Neale Hurston, and poems by Langston Hughes and Georgia Douglas Johnson.
