The Mescalero Project is a gem. The plot is one of the most creative I have ever read. Doug Buchs writes from a knowledge base of "facts" that is extraordinary. The book had one message to me throughout - keep reading. Once you begin, you do not want to put it down. How these trapped men learn to live (and die) together, how they create a "life" under the most trying of circumstances, and how they come to grips with the fact that the rest of the world (with the exception of a villain) has forgotten about them makes this a thriller and roller-coaster read. I have recommended this book to friends who are serious readers. Hats off to Buchs on a spellbinding first novel.
Not A Book to Pass Up

The Mescalero Project had me at the synopsis. An old abandoned prison with inmates trapped within caught my interest and I was not let down. The book is a wonderful mix of futuristic suspense, intrigue and mystery. The story swings between the past and the present as the last surviving inmate tells the story, but Mr. Buchs made it flow; a difficult undertaking for a book covering several decades.
Excellent New Author!

Doug Buchs excels in "The Mescalero Project", his first published novel. This book literally had me on the edge of my seat numerous times and was a page turner - I read half the book in one sitting. This book is written in the present when Jake Moss discovers the long-forgotten prison, with glimpses into what happened 50 years in the past through the diaries of inmate - and leader - James Stryker. Don't pass this one up!
