Jeb Carson is tired; he's battle-hardened and tired. He's lived so long in the fringe of society and out on the field of honor, he's become a law unto himself. Now that the war is over, he has one rule - his rule. He doesn't take orders. He doesn't do what he doesn't want to do. He champions only what he likes, and he likes Elena Malone. Years ago Elena was raped. Though a horrifying incident, she recovered and gave birth to a wonderful child whom she loves dearly. Now, the toddler has been kidnapped and she knows the child is her life. She enlists mercenary Jeb Carson to help her get the child back. She didn't mean to, at first, but once she sees his passion and honor, she knows he is her only hope...and not just to get her son back, but for a future as well. This book is a bit grittier than I normally expect to read from Harlequin. I very much enjoyed the dialogue, very snappy, quick, harsh at times, and seemingly realistic. Sadly, I haven't seen many westerns of late, and even sadder is that out of those I rarely find a good one in women's romance. Being raised on Louis Lamour spoils a girl. Anyway, this one definitely exceeded my expectations!
