A seventeen year old seaman apprentice befriends a Southern seaman on board a US Coast Guard cutter during a patrol over to Japan in the late 1950s and becomes intrigued with the body tension he observes coming from him whenever he comes near a Second Class Northern bos'n mate. Though the two have striking physical similarity, one is friendly and almost childlike in behavior, and the other one is a tight lipped person with a Calvinist disposition. They seem like two opposing forces creating the body tension he knows will eventually come to a head one day out on patrol. But he doesn't know the brutality of the act that will make it happen.
