Good Guys Can Finish First!

Unlike many Regency "heroes" St. John WANTS to marry. But somehow he keeps asking the wrong girl! As he tries to make the trip down the aisle, he meets a series of women who made me laugh and want to cry for poor St. John! Throughout the book, we get to know Althea and St. John very well and for once they also get to know each other. What a touching ending! Well worth the read-- so much fun.

All he needs is a bride!

St. John has always lived his life as an utmost gentleman. He has always dreamed of marrying and having a family. St. John has gone about attaining his dream in the correct manner, buying a suitable house to raise his family, amassing a fortune for creature comforts, even gaining a title for himself. He gives himself to his 30th birthday to prepare for his future, vowing to be married by that date. He doesn't really worry about a bride. He believes in love at first sight and thinks that he will know his bride when he sees her.When St. John first spots Miss Althea Pierce, everything that he has worked so hard for seems to culminate to a happy ending. He has never felt about anyone the way he feels when he sees her. She is the one who will fulfill all of his promises to himself. After wrangling an introduction to her he immediately proposes. Imagine his surprise when she says no. St. John is taken aback. As I said, he is a gentleman , and he apologizes for causing any embarrassment.The story goes on as St. John feels he must have been wrong about his love at first sight theory and continues to search for a wife. As he endures each betrothal and the subsequent breaking of each betrothal, he keeps bumping into Althea in the strangest places. She has problems of her own, involving a jilted fiancee. St. John doesn't know why he looks out for her, he just knows he must.This story is told in an almost Georgette Heyer type of way, very charmingly done. Some readers may not like the quiet way in which it is written for this author uses the periods correct English. St. John does gets my vote for favorite hero. He never appears discomposed even when he rightly should be. He has grace and style. He shows this from the first as Althea remembers first meeting him when she was a child at a ball. He gallantly asks her to dance. I will be keeping this one.

Non typical male

The hero in this book is not your average regency kind of guy, he wants to get married. Has been dreaming about since a child, has even build a fortune so he could make his future wife comfortable. He even made a vow he would do all this before his 30th birthday. So it happens, the day before his 30th birthday, he is an attendent at his friends wedding when he stops his future wife. At the wedding breakfast, he (St. John Pennyworthy) is introduce to Alethea Pierce within minutes he proposes to her. She thinking it is a joke, refuses. St. John is crushed, this is not what he had been planning. Through out the book, he goes about and proposes to almost every girl he meets, he even looks up his ex-mistress. They all refuse him for some reason or another. But Alethea keeps bumping into St. John throughout the London season and starts to become attracted to him, he even saves her from a very nasty ex-suitor.They finally get married at the end, when Alethea ends up proposing to St. John. Alethea seems very mature for a nineteen year old, but it's the St. John character who I can feel for. He's not your typical rake in these regency settings. He does not like to gamble, drink to excess, or have a string of mistresses. He gets all mussy at weddings and is not afraid to make money on business dealings. I enjoyed the change in the male character, it was very refreshing.
