The story of Esther offers one of the most gripping dramas in the Bible. An evil plot threatens not only the beautiful young queen but all her people. The future of the nation is stayed on one hope-that Esther can intercede with the king. From the story of Esther, Larry Christenson presents a bold view of intercession. The intercessor stands between two realms, the natural and the spiritual. Intercessory prayer brings the power of heaven down to earth. Step by step, Esther's intercession results in deliverance from the power of evil. The power of evil intrudes in our lives, too. It comes under many guises-schemes, betrayal, sickness, addiction. What can we do? The Mantle of Esther presents a challenge to enter that place of intercession where the enemy in our midst must yield to the authority and power of the King of kings. Book jacket.
Until I picked up Larry Christenson's book, 'The Mantle of Esther', I had never truly paid much attention to this bible story. I have often quoted Mordecai's famous words to Esther, " And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?" (Esther 4:14b) but never truly appreciated what Larry Christenson does in this book as the title states 'discovering the Power of Intercession'. He takes you to the set of this ancient story and takes you on a journey that not only allows you to discover what intercession is but leaves you desiring to experience it in your personal life. I absolutely love it because it reminded me of watching ancient movies as a little girl and how the characters gripped your attention until you felt a sense of familiarity with the setting of the story. The author makes the book of Esther come alive. Instead of reading an old testament book, you're reading the story of Esther and he grips your attention as the story unfolds and yet teaching fundamental principles on the power of intercessory prayer. I was so overwhelmed with the character of Esther that I cried and prayed along side her as she moved from event to event and as the reality of my own reality and circumstances flashed before my eyes. Esther's predicament felt so real to me and I learned that there is no other way to come to God. "In utter dependence, she presents herself before the king, and there she discovers the awesome power of intercession." Unlike any bible study you have ever attended, Larry Christenson walks you through the book of Esther and uses the events of this book to literally open your eyes to the labor of prayer."A spirituality that gets ensnared by sweet feelings, losing touch with the cross, has relinquished its identity." Larry Christenson teaches on the different characters in the book of Esther and how they are types in relation to God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and to see how the characters interact in this story and how he brings the truth of prayer to light. "Like a many-faceted diamond, the story of Esther reflects truth of intercessory prayer, but it is not itself the source of the teaching..the truth itself comes from the whole Scripture." A must read for all who desire to be acquinted with the work of prayer.
