Major Writings of Nichiren Daishonin

The major writings is actually a set of 7 books, which include the complete works of Nichiren Daishonin. These are extremely important in my mind as since the split of SGI and Nichiren Shoshu, these books are now out of print and have been replaced by a complete writings book. The new translations are somewhat different, and I find the old translations that are in the major writings books to be much better. I highly recommend these books to the Nichiren Buddhist, they are indispensible for study and comprise the english Gosho (honorable writings.) One last word: Note, only the first 6 volumes of this series come in paperback, the 7th is hardback only and the other 6 can also be found in hardback.

"The Major Writings of Nichiren Daishonin" are a series of 8 books published by the Soka Gakkai in the 1980's and early 1990's. I'm not sure which volume this one refers to, but they are all essential to the correct study and practice of Nichiren Buddhism. In 1999, the Soka Gakkai compiled these 8 volumes into 1 concise book, also titled "The Major Writings of Nichiren," containing 172 of Nichiren's writings. I have only seen this one-volume book at Soka Gakkai International (SGI-USA) community centers. However, there are other volumes that contain many of the same writings, published in cooperation with Soka Gakkai by Columbia University, and translated/edited by the world-renowned Burton Watson and Philip Yampolsky. They are titled "The Letters of Nichiren" and "Selected Writings of Nichiren." I also highly recommend the brilliant translation of "The Lotus Sutra" by Burton Watson.
essential reading for any Nichiren or Mahayana buddhist!

These writings are letters Nichiren Daishonin wrote to his devoted followers, even while in exile.Three precepts of Nichiren's budhism are Faith, Practice, and Study.
