A real treasure!

This book is a three chapter selection from " A Secret Search In India". I loved this book, the power of its message, and I went on to read the main book these three chapters were extracted from. WOW! I would recommend it to anyone! This man knows how to convey a message. It is like going to India in your imagination. I give it Five-Stars!!

Opens out the grand possibilities of the spirit

This book is essentially an extract from the larger 'A Search in Secret India'. It is also the most important, most thrilling, most inspiring part of the book. I was fortunate enough to discover Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi through this extract/book. The book combines vivid and colorful descriptions and the somewhat wry style of comment, typical of the 'British Gentleman' that Paul Brunton was (which I, as an Indian, enjoyed immensely), with a quest that is intensely personal and breathtakingly grand. A quest for realization and a search for the essential meaning of life. For Brunton, the quest culminated in a deep experience that will astound us in its grandiosity, thrill us with its possibility, and perhaps help us recover somewhat from the disillusionment and the cynicism that is the mark of our age. Buy it or borrow it, read it and pass it on.

The Essence of Ramana Maharshi

Paul Brunton was a very important person in the early years of my life and continues to be twenty-six years after he passed. I have the greatest respect for what he did. He was an explorer in every sense of the word. He traveled to the far corners of the earth looking for spiritual teachers and answers to life's great questions. One of his great achievements was to introduce Sri Ramana Maharshi to the West. It is amazing how few people know of Paul's role. Without him, we might never have known that one of the greatest sages of the last century even existed. Between 1934 and 1952, he wrote a series of successful books and then seemed to go into hibernation, spending most of the last twenty years of his life in Switzerland. But he had not been idle. It was only after his death in 1981, that a 16-volume set of his writings during those was years was published. Many consider these books to be one of the great spiritual documents of the last century. This small book consists of three chapters from Paul Brunton's, "A Search in Secret India," first published in 1934. So if you have "A Search," be aware that this book contains some of the same material. That being said, it is wonderful to see some of what he learned from Ramana Maharshi and his observations of him collected in one place. It is an excellent introduction to Ramana's thought and why he is so highly regarded. As Brunton says, "I study him intently and gradually come to see in him the child of a remote Past, when the discovery of spiritual truth was reckoned of no less value than is the discovery of a gold mine today. It dawns upon me with increasing force that, in this quiet ad obscure corner of South India, I have been led to one of the last of India's spiritual supermen." For anyone on the spiritual path, whatever your primary orientation, this is a marvelous book that will challenge and inspire you. Highly recommended.
