A Favorite

This is one of my favorite Betty Neels novels and I have read a lot. Wonderful characters, children and pets, and loyal servants all create a lovely story with one of the best endings! I recommend it for readers who enjoy people treating each other nicely (except for the obligatory bad girl) and a sweet romance.

The Magic of Betty Neels -- 5+ stars

Book Description: Arabella Birch had a less than happy introduction to Holland when she became involved in a road accident. It seemed destined that the first person on the scene should be Dr. Gideon van der Vorst, who took charge of the situation--and Arabella--in a very commanding way. When Arabella found herself involved professionally with the imposing doctor, she began to wonder if destiny had known what it was doing. Once her glamorous cousin Hilary caught sight of Gideon, it would be no use falling in love with him. A Wonderful Betty Neels "rich, good-looking Dutch Doctor / plain, kind, British Nurse" tale that any Neels fan is sure to enjoy. Doctor Gideon van der Vorst is Hospital Medical Director in Doesburg while Arabella Birch is a Pediatric Nurse with a stammer. The issue of the stammer is well-done in an endearing manner. Arabella's beautiful, selfish, nurse-cousin is surprisingly more evil than usual and she, with the help of her family, works to "interest" Gideon in her instead of Arabella. Gideon's patience, persistence, and the manner in which he achieves his goal, though entertaining and satisfying, is "different" to say the least.
