I first read this book several years ago, but have always kept a copy on my bookshelves. The story is made all the more poignant by my growing up in southern England during the war years, and with memories of standing by the side of the road calling out to the lorries loaded with "Yanks" 'Got any gum, chum?'. Various candy and chocolate bars--almost unknown to us in those years--were thrown to us from time to time. Delicious memories!
