Lost, but not forgotten

Relatively speaking, William Heinesen is not known in this country, but he is one of the truly great Scandinavian novelist of the 20th Century. His novel, The Lost Musicians, takes place in the tiny island country of the Faroes at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a microcosm of the world, the stuggle to survive poverty, the struggle against the tyranny of religion and the struggle to produce music and art. It is about the relationships that foster deep feelings and deeper love. All of this is told with humor and satiric understanding of what it is to be human. A quietly great novel by a great author.
