entertaining fictional insight into the early church era

This book has two very different aspects. On one hand, it is fast-paced, with graphic and gratuitous descriptions of sex and violence. It has beautiful descriptions of life in the Roman Empire during the first century A.D. It captures the sights, sounds, and smells of the period. It has action, romance, and humor. On the other hand, the book deals with serious religious issues about the foundation of the Christian church. It depicts the apostles as all too human, as drunkards, adulterers and more. It clings to old myths that are unsubstantiated and to anyone with a religious background it could be highly offensive.Taken as a whole, the book keeps the reader turning pages, at times because of the action and at times to see the philosophical issues resolved. Even if the book is crude at times and heretical at others, it is still a page-turner.
