Gottfried Oosterwal in his book, THE LORD'S PRAYER THROUGH PRIMITIVE EYES, A Stone Age People's Journey, presents an amazing, in-depth study of its content. As an educator, well-versed in theology, geology, anthropology, history of religion, as well as, medical and health sciences, he is well qualified to present this study. This book, based on his experience while a missionary to the then un-known tribes of West New Guinea, explains how he won the trust of these Stone Age people. Once their trust was won through Oosterwal's care for their sick and his prayers, the chief asked him to teach him to pray. Oosterwal naturally turned to the Lord's Prayer as the model prayer, but soon found himself struggling to contextualize it so they could grasp its meaning. With no concept of "kingdom," or "our daily bread," he involved them in the process until, together, they arrived at a prayer they understood. Through the author's study of the Lord's Prayer, he shows how this prayer ties in every facet of the Gospel, including the Christian's commission to mission. In fact, he calls it a "road map for mission." Sprinkled like seasoning throughout the book, you will find interesting experiences of the author with these primitive people. This book requires deep thought of the reader and gives incentive to deeper Bible study. Also, it is an excellent book for use with Bible study groups. At the end of each chapter, there are 5 questions for reflection. This is a book to treasure and mark! Betty L. Sheldon, author of OMNIPIECE
