The Locavore Way

I just finished reading this book and I'd recommend it to both beginning and knowledgeable locavores. In fact, I wasn't even sure what a locavore was until now. The book is written in a friendly style by a woman who clearly knows her stuff. Its full of useful information from shopping and seasonal cooking, to how to find local food when dining out. There is a reference section with ideas on how to cook every vegetable, wonderful recipes and a fabulous glossary explaining all the terms. I even loved the illustrations. This book was a find.

Loved This! Learned So Much!

A friend gave me this book and I loved it. Cotler is a fun, engaging writer, never a dreary scold. She presents information about the slow food movement in a yummy way that's easy to digest (sorry, couldn't resist). Now, when I go to the market - be it the supermarket or the Greenmarket - I'm much more aware of what I'm buying and what its provenance might be. Sure, I still might buy the Chilean asparagus because it's cheaper and comes out earlier than my local farmers'. Cotler doesn't expect her readers to be strict fanatics. (Ya gotta start somewhere!) But, after reading the book, I definitely savor the opportunity to buy seasonal, locally-grown food, which, as Cotler points out, is not only good for the planet, but a treat for the palate. Local food is just fresher and more flavorful. I also loved the recipes Cotler sprinkles throughout. They're painless! Cotler makes clear that fresh ingredients are the main event and that they don't need a lot of fussing. City-dweller that I am, I only wish I could have my own garden out back. Oh well, I do have the Greenmarket, and it's time to go pick up some ramps!

An absolutely great read!

I'd highly recommend this book. Ms. Cotler, who seems to be both a serious foodie and social activist, been doing this for awhile and really knows her stuff. There's lots out there on the subject, but this book covers everything you need to know to becoming a locavore -- practically, clearly and intelligently. It focuses on both the pleasure and practical side of eating locally. I've been at this awhile and still found it extremely useful, but I'm giving it to my friends, even the ones who aren't eating locally yet, so they'll know what to do and get inspired too. An added plus? Lots of references, recipes and recipe ideas, a great layout and FUN to read.

A great find!

A great find! I was attracted to this book for its comprehensive look at becoming a locavore and by the comments by those in the know on the back flap. I also noticed that the knowledgable Nach Waxman of the Kitchen Arts and Letters bookstore in NYC recommends it. This compact book with its fabulous layout covers everything I need to know -- all in practical style that is fun to read and inspiring. I highly recommend it and plan to start shopping and cooking this week. Delicious!

Great book

This is a great book. Cotler is a wonderful writer and she makes the local food movement accessible to a newcomer like me who wants to support local food producers but not sure where to begin. Plus she's not dogmatic or out to guilt trip anyone. Her love of real food emanates from every page and is contagious. And there are tons of recipes to explore. (Check out her blog as well. She is a real find!)
