A retelling of a traditional Slavic tale in which a clever little girl outwits the bear who is holding her captive by hiding in a basket of pies. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book goes back to my earliest memories. My little sister adored this story and asked for it continuously. She had it memorized. My parents actually put her in a room with a tape recorder to record her reading it -- a major family story for years to come. She just kept "reading" the same page over and over: "Look at all the berries they exclaimed!" I HIGHLY recommend this out of print title for any child's library! Who doesn't love a tale where the clever little girl, so helpless compared to a big bear, can outwit the villian and arrive back home in the arms of her precious grandparents? This story is a GREAT read-aloud, with the bear speaking in couplets and the little girl "calling out" repetitive warnings to the bear: "not one pie may you eat!" Forever in my mind is the gorgeous last page where the little girl is covered in berry juice, hugging her grandparents. It's a must have, and only so many out there!
