Advice to parents, from colonial times till the 1960's.

In this attractive book Mary Cable tells us about the child-rearing practices of European-Americans since they arrived here, with copious quotations from the most respected contemporary books. It is interesting reading and, in view of how outlandish some of the ideas promoted by leading authorities in the past had been, it also suggests that deviating from the edicts of present-day books when they are hard on you or your child may not be so bad.
