A Reverent Treatment of Rev. Charles Finney

Lewis Drummond writes about peoples' lives in a way that gets you hooked and interested. This is especially true of his biography of Charles Finney. You read about Finney's Connecticut upbringing, his shattering conversion to Christ and subsequent baptism of the Spirit at age 29, and his conviction about answering the call of God to go into the ministry. You also read of his rejection of hard Calvinism, his embracing of new measures such as the anxious bench and the protracted prayer meeting, and his ministry and revival successes in New York and eventually throughout the country. You read of his storybook love for his wife, his 23 years of happy marriage, and his grief upon her death at age 42. You also read of Finney's many enemies, both saved and unsaved (people like Asahel Nettleton and Lyman Beecher strongly opposed Finney's Arminian theology and innovative methods). The book is divided up into three parts: The Making of a Minister, the making of an evangelist, and the making of an educator (Finney went on to become the president of Oberlin College. This is a great read, and I also like how Drummond lets Finney himself tell the story of his conversion and call to the ministry. If there is any criticism of the book, it would have to be that Drummon is quick to defend Finney from accusation and to whitewash him in almost all aspects (theology, personality, etc). But the book is definitely 5 star quality. I hope it gets reprinted soon. Rev. Marc Axelrod
