THE first story of The Wedding Trail - 1847 - great characters - Lieutenant Matthew Hull - [...] son of the river woman Emma Callom and Hector Hull - Hector deals in moonshine. They never married. Then we have four female friends - some wanting marriage and some do not. Matilda "Tildy" MacIntyre - daughter of Ravania and Ira. Ira hates Matt. And is angry with his mother for living on the farm with his brother Jim Mac. Pete is a wagon builder. Jim MacIntyre is the father of Margaret "Meggie" and Pete. Ira has 3 sons Josh, Lewis, and Eddie. And there is the legend of Jim and Ira's mother, "Granny" who inherited her husband's money. No one know what she has done with it. Well, Ira is in debt and needs money for his store and has promised Tildy to the nephew of a Muncie store owner. Only the nephew, Afton Walton, turns out to be a bit rotund and arrogant. Very unpleasant. She refuses to marry the man thereby causing a bit of trouble. Matt is all for taking out his revenge of Ira on Tildy. Until he meets her. The four girls, Tildy, 19 - Meggie, 17 - Rachel, ? - and Faith Tole, 21 have formed a sewing circle and they gather to work on quilting. Meggie and Faith don't want marriage - Rachel is not sure and Tildy does not until she meets up the Matt. But Matt is not a good choice for a lady. Meggie wants the adventure of the California trip. Enter Trail Godfroy and Jed Sampson - Trail Godfroy must be nearing 50 and has been coming back to Pikeston every year to watch over his daughter. Now they are talking to the citizens of Pikeston about gathering a wagon train to head for California. Matt wants to train for Law and asks Mr. Ridley, uncle of Rachel Ridley whose mother was Mrs. Ridley's sister, Belle Williams who married Barman. Oh, what a neatly woven story! Mr. Ridley tends to manipulate his neighbors to support his business of law. He does his darndest to talk the people out of making a trip to California. There goes his business. Mr. Ridley has told Matt that he must read the 4 volumns of Blackstone Law. The many little twists and turns of these people's lives draw you into the plot of the story and it is hard to see it end. You just have a need to follow these characters as if they are really alive. I have probably missed some other great characters like the Toles, of the blacksmith trade and Matt's sister, 15 who wants a better life and the secrets that some have. And the secrets are excellent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --m -- these are definitely keepers.
