I had this book when I was very young, and it was one of the first I read by myself. It's a sad story but a beautiful book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in old fashioned fairytales that aren't always sweet and nice, you can tell that Walt Disney's brand of sugarcoating would be wasted here. The story deals with flawed characters and tragic lives, but there is a happy ending. The illustrations are quite subtle and lovely and suit the text.
worth reading
