The Legacy of Norman Rockwell

This Book brought Tears to my eyes as I worked my way through it. Perhaps we have become to chic and vapid to care about the America that Rockwell presents us a it stretches accross America from the darkest days of the depression; through the wars years;into our post war American dreams and beyond through the Turman and Eisenhower years, and beyond. The painting that evoke the tears in my eyes is on page 102. It depicts a mother whose son is helping her peel potatoes on leave during the second World War. That soldier could have been anyone of my three uncles who all saw combat and all served as officers, and all are gone now. The Elect Casey painting on 114 I think better than anything else I have captures the spirt of the last two weeks since the election. Casey is a little older than Gore or Bush, but he may seem so when the election is resolved. The other thing about Rockwell is that he did not look at America through rose colored glasses. Far from it as by looking at his painting on page 123 that shows a little Afro American Girl on her way to School between four Marshalls. Of all the great men he depicted I think he did the best with LBJ on page 126. Where we sense the Pathos spread across his faced as he realizes the he was trapped in a world which was much larger than anything he had faced in the house or senate, and that he had taken upon himself a burden to great for any one.
