First of a trilogy, The Last Rangers paints a bleak dystopian future where modern robber barons and high technology criminals have returned the State of Texas to a lawless frontier and environmental devastation has baked the landscape into vast tracts of toxic and arid badlands. The series was published by Berkley, not usually known for science fiction. The story picks up in the year 2035 with Texas Ranger Alamo Smith, one of the few remaining from the Rangers' decimated ranks. Seemingly tasked with an impossible mission in the face of years of law enforcement failure, Smith is determined to set to right the balance between individual freedoms and law & order.
