The Last Pirate

The Last Pirate is a great book, a must for any pirate buff! Filled with truth and fictional tales and lore!

A Feisty Taste of History

Marti Phillip's "The Last Pirate" is a must read for all who love a taste of history created by the story of colorful,"real" characters. Ms. Phillip's has done her research. This tale of the era surrounding the War of 1812 when Louisiana was aided and abeted by pirates of the best (and worst)kind puts you right there in time and place. The author has painted a feisty heroine in Carly and--ah, that notorious Captain Wolfe--whew--that we all might have a man like him in our life. As a former resident of the area this story is about and one who loves history, I find that Ms. Phillip's gives the reader a perfect picture of the Creole society and happenings (though fictional in most part) are very believable. All in all, a wonderful read by someone who had given up on historical fiction. I will certainly follow this author through her next romp in history.

AT LAST, a pirate historical for the thinking reader

Thank Goodness, this is not one of those contrived tales that make me want to hurl the book at the wall because the hero and heroine are so stupid. I'm talking about the typical "pirate takes innocent heroine captive who is fated to be seduced"... No, this one is entertaining but more realistic. The historical content has obviously been well-researched; the feel of the period and the notable people captured in this story is to the author's credit. The heroine is spirited and the hero dark, stubborn and brooding enough to entertain those who like a good romance. The pirate becomes her reluctant captain for hire in the quest to find her missing father as war threatens all they hold dear. Will her high society family ever accept him as the man she wants, or will the elite of New Orleans try to destroy him? The story of their struggle against the odds is poignant, has just enough humor and keeps the pages turning. How Jean Lafitte's outlawed pirates of Barataria helped Jackson save New Orleans from the British assault is intriguing. I wish the book had been longer.

The Last Pirate--A Review by Author, Sally painter

Indulge your senses on the wild sea, in the exotic bayous & the city of Old New Orleans. Feel the ocean rolling beneath your feet as you stand with Captain Adrian Wolfe on the deck of the pirate king's ship. Amid the War of 1812, New Orleans plantation heiress runs away on a dangerous mission to find her missing father, a counterspy thought taken by the enemy British and given up for dead by the American Navy. Her unlikely deal, struck with the notorious, fascinating pirate known as "Devil Wolfe" sets the stage for a forbidden romance that is soon threatened when the lines of loyalty must be drawn. Ms. Phillips weaves a not to be missed tale wrought in history and passion as her characters struggle for their rightful places in the chaos of war. The story captures the flavor of 1814-15 New Orleans in an epic with pirates such as Jean Lafitte & Dominique You, and corrupt government officials as well as war heroes, French, Spanish and Creoles, all seeking their place in a destiny that will live forever in history. --Sally Painter, author of Shadows of Love, Avid Press
