Land and history are inseperable

As a kid growing up in New Mexico I spent hours roaming the desert land surrounding Roswell. Every where I went, though I was ignorant of the history around me, I felt the history. It was in the air, and in the ground. It was behind every mesquite bush, in every dry arroyo, in the muddy waters of the Pecos River, and in every breath I took. There was not a moment that I did not see and feel the pain and the pleasure of every figure that ever set foot in the area, from Ruidoso, to the oil fields in Hobbs, New Mexico; from Rio Hondo to the Five Mile Hill west of Roswell, to the Bottomless Lakes east of Roswell, I saw the ghosts of early Native Americans, the Spanish land barons, and the first white settlers, and modern ranchers. Reading The Land was like re-living the visions of my childhood, where the romance and the tragedy of reality replayed before my eyes. In this book, R.K. Swisher makes the connection of history to land real. Indeed, after you read this novel, you won't view your home, or the land around you the same ever again. Just a few years ago, I found myself in the Cerrillos and Madrid area south of Santa Fe, New Mexico, along the Turquoise Trail, generally where much of this novel is set. And yes, the rocks, the springs, the trees and the spirits still offer to tell you their story as you walk the trails. Thank you for the journey, Mr. Swisher.
