Not Good

I ordered this book to read aloud to my kids before our upcoming trip to Yellowstone. We didn't even get through the second chapter. The kids in this book were such brats, so unrealistic for children of the 1870's- or even for today. Within those two chapters, kids rolled their eyes at their mother, mumbled that their mother's special stew tasted like vomit as their mother invited new acquaintances over for dinner and yelled and made a huge scene in town screaming that someone was a murderer because they had animal pelts. It wasn't written very well either- very simple. I gave it two stars because it had a nice map in the front and an okay format.

I liked this book

I was very priviledged to meet Deanna last week at the Moose Ranger Station. I got the books because I was hoping to learn more about Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. I haven't yet read book 2--I just finished book 1. I especially liked the 16 pages of history. For instance there is mention of John Muir. I live near a park named for him and now I have to research more about him. I thought this book was one of those you could read curled up on the sofa. And it was. There is mystery and intrigued. There is mention of animals being killed--part of the mystery but while very sad--is truthful. And I don't believe anything is worded that would offend a young one's eyes or mind. They'll have questions--so be prepared with some answers!!!!!

Yellowstone and the Environment: The story starts here!

A good book to get kids interested in the preservation of our national parks. The characters have already developed a lot in the first 160 pages of the story, but it is obvious there is much more to come because of the exciting cliffhanger at the end. I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book! Deanna strives to not only entertain, but educate as well! A great way to get young readers started on the path to learning both about Yellowstone and human invovement in the environment. Kids will want to be just like the strong lead characters in the book (James, Alice, and Tom). I also think that this would be a great book for parents to read along with their kids. Get the whole family involved!

A great book!

I'm a seventh grade student at Sequoyah Middle School in Federal Way, Wash., who has read the book Land of Curiosities. This is a great book for children and adults. It is one of my favorite books and I recommend it. This is an exciting book with many adventures that will keep you reading the whole day. Also the kids in the story love to help out the environment, so after I read this book I'm itching to do something good for the environment. This book is so good that I would give it a rating of 5 stars. Don't wait -- buy the book and start reading. You won't regret it, and I hope you will enjoy it. Have fun! Nazar B.

Exciting adventure with an eco conscience

If you or your kids enjoy Harry Potter, the American Girl series, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, the Old West, Indians/Native Americans, animals, the environment, exciting adventures or just plain good story telling, then buy this book. It is a tale of two siblings who find themselves fatherless at the end of the civil war and move with their mom out west to Montana to start a new life. The trials of their personal lives become entangled with the rarely (if ever) told wild west adventure of the founding of Yellowstone, the world's first national park and as the book's wonderful afterword points out, a major milestone in environmental history. It is a "novel" approach to environmental sensitivity without any preachiness, even tho their step dad is a minister! Plus there is a web site to go to for further exploration. Can't wait for the next one to find out what happens to Alice.

For teachers, parents and kids!

As a 7th grade teacher, I was thrilled to add The Land of Curiousities to my classroom library. Not only is this an exciting adventure story, it is a new historical fiction genre. This is the first historical fiction novel I have found that addresses environmental history. I highly suggest checking it out for a fun read with your own children or for a teachers' unit on reconstruction and the development of the west. Also, there is an incredible real history section in the back which is an excellent teaching aid.
