Hopefully not prophetic

I just remembered reading this novel after reading about a lawsuit by some scientists who are concerned about CERN, a massive new supercollider physics machine set to go online in one week from this review's writing. They are concerned about the machine creating micro black holes that could become self-sustaining and beyond our technical ability to do anything about-and eventually consuming the earth. This nightmare scenario is what The Krone Experiment, written some 20 years ago, is about. The novel has some flaws and coinicidences that require the reader to suspend disbelief, but few are the novels that don't! I thought it was entertaining, and thought provoking. If all goes well with CERN then I expect this review to be read by a handful of people at best over the next few years, and I sincerely hope that's what happens. Because if this book starts getting a lot of attention it will be for reasons other than being an older novel worth a read if you like physics and Doomsday scenarios. -Steve

FROM BACK COVER

On the high seas, a Soviet super-carrier is mysteriously destroyed. Nearly 22,000 miles above the earth, the Russians blast an American satellite out of the skies in retaliation, and the U.S. launches its own space weapons. The world is on the brink of star-war holocaust as a crack C.I.A. scientific team desperately tries to discover what is really happening A race against catastrophic becomes a last high-tech, white-knuckled gamble for survival... for America... for Russia... for every living thing on earth...

Sci-Fi Meets the Techno-Thriller

Something has punched a hole in the Soviet aircraft carrier KIEV. So begins Mr. Wheeler's effective melding of two normally disparate genres. The KIEV sustains heavy damage and immediately, the Soviets suspect that their carrier was the victim of some new American space weapon. An intense arms race, especially in military space assets ensues but as more incidents are reported worldwide, it is up to the Science and Technology division at the CIA to race to find the cause of these strange occurances before the USA and the USSR get into a real shooting. The answer was a very creative resolution. If you want to know. . .read the book.

Oh, man, is this exciting.

I've been voraciously reading this book for a week, and it is so exciting. Plus, I met Dr. Wheeler at an astro lecture, so it is fun to read sci-fi where you know the physics is *right*. It elegantly captures the tension of the Cold War, and it is a wonderful mystery story.
