Massive and well written but not "by Allan Millett"

Volume 1 and Volume 2 arrived. Massive and well worth the (amazingly low) cost but... Definitely not "written by" Allan Millett... (an expert writer on the Korean War...) The volumes are written by the Korea Institute of Military History... Millett merely wrote the introduction on volume 1. On volume 2 he wrote an introduction and was also involved in looking over the work prior to publication for errors re English language constructions and military terminology... But he did not write these volumes. Sometimes this is not made clear and he is listed as the author... Easy to read... double spaced... and does not have "highly improbable grammar and syntax" as the original Korean Military history of the Korean War in English did many years ago. Per Millett himself, while updated history far better and more complete... a touch "delicate" on the reputations of some senior officers... My father was the first American liaison officer to the Ethiopian battalion in Korea and I have read many works of the Korean War. I am well pleased with these two volumes. Yankee Papa
Excellent South Korean History of the Korean War
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
Very little has previously appeared in print in English on the South Korean military's participation in the Korean War. This series is a noble attempt to fill the historical gap. Most Americans have no idea the South Korean military would, by 1953, field 20 combat divisions and two corps headquarters, or in other words nearly two-thirds of the ground combat forces fighting under United Nations Command / Eighth US Army command. This volume does a credible job explaining the strengths, weaknesses, major combat actions, and important personalities of the South Korean military. It also includes information on some of the North Korean and Chinese commanders, more than found in most Western-centric histories of the Korean War. A useful addition to any KW library.

In this work, Prof. Millett has undertaken the task of outlining the most significant sources for studying the Korean War. He provides a brief narrative of the war, including his valuable insights. But the heart of the book is his extensive discussion of his bibliography, which will help the student find the most valuable sources available for his/her research. A terrific tool for Korean War studies.
Wonderful!

Educational and interesting. My husband hasn't been able to put it down. The best gift I've found for a history buff in a long time!
