This Book is "Gold"

Yet another link the Captain Alatriste chain. It's another wicked, mysterious, thriller of a book with beautiful cities of Old and New Spain, dazzling beauties, gold glinting, swords ringing out, and shots blasting. Another interesting twist in the Story of Inigo Balboa and Captain Alatriste, "The King's Gold" will lead Alatriste and Inigo to the money they need, but places they don't want to be. As they both delve deeper into the trap that is the nobility they form a world around them that is wholly their own, but they are beginning to have less and less control. A definite must read for all Reverte fans and if you haven't read the Alatriste series go back to the first one, "Captain Alatriste", read up and be prepared to be sucked into a world unlike any other you have ever read about.

All Good!

Quite an accomplishment. Reverte's follow-up to the saga of Altriste continues into the backdrop of 16th and 17th century Spain. Historically accurate and a splendidly good read.

His Best To Date

Perez-Reverte has struck gold with his latest in the Captain Alatriste saga, "The King's Gold." Full of swordfights, double-dealing, suspense, the honor of rogues, and subtle hints of the future twists in to be completed books, this new novel is clearly the best so far - just barely edging out the first of the Captain Alatriste books. This book continues Perez-Reverte's promise of an excellent story, for here the captain must recruit fellow swordmasters, duellists and ex-soldiers for a night's dirty work. We also see the continued development of the relationship of his page, Inigo, and his dangerous infatuation with Angelica. Perez-Reverte paints a picture of Spain lost in the gaze of itself in the mirror while corruption, greed and fanaticsm slowly bring about its downfall. All in all, an extremely worthy addition to the Captain Alatriste story and a wonderful novel. I wish I could read it again with the same sense of unfolding discovery as the adventure plays out....

Just finished the fourth of this magical saga of adventures and I cannot wait to purchase the next couple of tomes! Once again suspense crawls with a slow and patient pace, characters are resuscitated from Velázquez's canvases, the narrative borrows conspicuously Cervantine sketches, and the action episodes sprawl spontaneously with diminutely described fencing and brawling scenes. Do Pérez-Reverte's books get published in English? Such Spielbergesque epic is worth its circulation in one too many a tongue.

A Riveting Perez-Reverte Piece

In "El Oro del Rey" Perez-Reverte continues the story of Iñigo Balboa and his teacher/mentor/protector Capitan Alatriste. The story has elements of suspense, danger, love, betryal, loyalty, friendship and courage, and keeps the reader so captivated that I had a hard putting down the book and wished the story would never end. In this story Iñigio is betrayed by the women he has fallen dangerosuly in love the beautiful Angelica de Alquezar and is almost killed by the infamous italian hired killer Gualterio Malatesta, only to be saved at the lsat minute by Captain Alatriste and his friends. The story continues on as Captain Alatriste puts into motion the plan to rescue the King's gold with the help of a motley group of hired men that come from the underbelly of 17th century Seville society. It is in this part of the book that Pereze-Reverte shines in his ability to not only spin a good yarn, but to use the various characters, plot, narrative and historical context to make social commentary on Spain's polticial and social development. I highly recommend this book.
