A must have in anyone's collection

Very comprehensive. I keep a copy near my work for easy reference. Every weaver from beginner to advanced should have a copy.

an all-time classic

If you had to buy one book for your weaving library, then this would have to be it! The author's knowledge is encyclopeadic, and regardless of which edition you have, its invaluable! Ms Black covers each technique thoroughly, and in detail, with exercises along the way to help you understand the technique, and expand your skills. It was originally written as a study course for isolated weavers, and anyone following the exercises in this book would have a thorough knowledge of the craft by the time they reached the end. It may not be glossy, or fantastically up to date, as some of the latest republications are, but this is the grounding in weaving that you need to master and understand, before branching out and experimenting. Its also useful to refer back to this book when trying out new modern techniques: chances are its already been well documented in here! So this book serves two purposes. Firstly as a comprehensive and stand-alone course of instruction in weaving, and secondly as a reference book on weaving with up to four shafts that you can go back to time and again. Worth its weight in gold!

The Key to Weaving

This is the Gold Standard against which all other "how to weave" books are judged. Mary Black covers everything from the basics of reading a draft to warping the loom to finishing the piece. There is also a great deal of very useful information to help you decide what kind of fiber you want to use for your pieces, how to set up your own projects, even how to figure out just what you have on that unlabled cone and what you can do with it. Unlike other weaving books I've had, Key to Weaving manages to be hugely useful to both beginning and experienced weavers. The Key to Weaving: A Textbook of Hand Weaving for the Beginning Weaver
