I have been searching for a children's picture book version of Jesus' "Good Shepherd" parable since reading Sophia Cavalletti's The Religious Potential of the Child, & The Good Shepherd & the Child. This title by Cyncie Smith was a happy find! This is actually a retelling, not the Bible derived text, & combines elements from both the "Good Shepherd" & "Lost Sheep" parables, as well as The 23rd Psalm; well done. I do miss the element of the shepherd knowing & calling each of his sheep by name, but this is easily added in while reading aloud. It is the illustrations that elevate this book from a happy to a joyful find. So often, I am disappointed in the quality of illustration in Christian children's books; this one is truly an exception. These illustrations are vibrantly alive & convey the emotions of both sheep & shepherd. There is a celebration with dancing at the end of this story, as the shepherd invites friends & neighbors to rejoice with him over finding his lost sheep. My three-year-old catches the enthusiasm. I feel like celebrating myself. I highly recommend this gem of a book.
