Christopher Elliott Weddle is a young man, 22 years old, living in Iowa. He has been reared by loving parents and has been doted on by a gruff old grandfather. He is the only heir to a vast industrial fortune. Suddenly the world ends and Chris finds himself trying to cope with being totally alone. He walks the west searching for other survivors with his only companions being three dogs. He questions in his heart why just him?Chris decides he will walk to Seattle and if he finds no one, he will return to Iowa and travel no more. He has little real hope of finding other survivors, but feels he must make this final effort. The prospect of living out his life totally alone is a dreadful one so he sets out for the Northwest in search of his future.
