A profound Jewish thinker meditates on Jewish historical reality
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
Emil Fackenheim was one of the most profound Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. For him the great and turning point event, and the central element in shaping his philosophical and historical thought was the 'Shoah' the murder of the Jews of Europe by the Nazis. For him this central event changes the way we see everything in Jewish history. In his later work he will talk about the 'tikkunim' or acts of repair made by those who suffered and help others in the 'Shoah'. He postulated the principle of the six-hundred and fourteenth commandment, of not giving Yimach Shmo( Hitler) any posthumous victory. Fackenheim viewed the coming into existence and survival of Israel as central to the Jewish Return to History.
