This is probably the most detailed of all the books describing the history of the 1st generation (Issei) immigrants from Japan. Ichioka's research for this book extended from Japan all the way to the dusty shelves of UC Berkeley and UCLA's libraries. If you ever wanted to learn about why these people left their native Japan (push and pull factors) for the hard life that awaited for them in the xenophobic society of Hawaii & California in the late 19th/early 20th century, then this is the book to read.....
