Engaging and charming account of a trip to Indonesia that leaves out all the mind-numbing boredom of most travel books ("make sure you take American Express travelers checks with denominations below $50: we found that by getting to the third window of the travel agent's office before 5:30am was a sure way to catch Pepe, the most honest of the government guides...) and concentrates on the fun anecdotes that made the trip worthwhile. The interplay between the stiff upper-lip British author and her slightly dyspeptic American traveling companion is a common theme throughout their travels. The book is valuable, too, in that it describes a time, over twenty years ago, before the Bali bombings when Indonesia was actually still living in a military dictatorship and travel by two unattached females through a muslim country was less widely attempted. Don't buy this book to find out where to get the best rate on your Australian dollars or how to score Ecstasy in some beach disco, but do if you want to experience the adventures of two amateurs who completed a rather amazing odyssey and managed to enjoy every minute of some rather uncomfortable adventures!
