McKiernan's best fantasy/adventure!

"The Iron Tower" trilogy by Dennis L. McKiernan is one of my favorite fantasy reads. The three components of the trilogy are 'The Dark Tide', 'Shadow of Doom' and 'The Darkest Day'. This trilogy follows the adventures of Tuck and Danner and their companions, (characters who are members of a physically small people called 'Warrows') as they travel countless leagues to fight the source of the evil hordes that have begun invading their quiet homeland. The one criticism of this work is that some fantasy/adventure readers find it follows Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' closely; in fact, a little too closely. And this statement is, in my opinion, probably justified. However, this does not diminish the quality of the writing and the beautifully developed story found within these pages. I loved the main protagonists with the same intensity as Tolkien's Frodo and Samwise; maybe even more. Tuck and Danner have a likeable, genuine quality that draws you into this trilogy and make you read on and on; in short, I really cared for them. In addition to some great and treacherous treks, there are some huge battles, magical creatures and friends and enemies found in unexpected places. There is, for those that care about such things, an adequate map; allowing you to keep abreast of where events occurred and also maintain some sense of position and direction in the wide spread geographic area that this tale covers. Conclusion: An enthralling fantasy/adventure experience; probably McKiernan's best work. Notwithstanding the criticism of readers for its closeness to 'The Lord of the Rings', to me, it still remains a treasured read. And finally this, being the sentimentalist that I am, I found the last couple of pages of the last book extremely touching and sad. Tears streaming down my cheeks and choking back sobs; a reflection perhaps not only on the beauty and sensitivity of the characters within, but also on the entire tone of this magnificent work. 5 Stars Ray Nicholson

The best book of them all...

Well, the best book by his author. His way of retelling the story of The Lord of the Rings. Swift, fast, without so many words. Oh, if you have to read Lord of the Rings go read Lord of the Rings. If you want diet, no-sugar Lord of the Rings read this book. Took me less than a week, while going to work, to finish this book. Elves, Warrows, Dwarves and Men must fight an EVIL! To save Mithgar from the EVIL and the DARKEST DAY! Should I put the tiny trademark symbol next to those words? EVIL! Anyway, Dennis L. McKiernan, to my understanding got into a fight with a car, lost and was trapped in bed. So he took pen to paper and wrote stories. It is the best of his books I have so far and I would suggest it as the first you read, so you get a understanding on how his setting works.

Fantastic!!

This series is every bit as good as Tolkien. One of my favorite authors and stories of all time. All you 'one star' reviewers, get off the sauce, willya? *wink*

Classic work.

Terrific beginning of a classic epic fantasy series. I was searching for this book from many months, but finally had the opportunity to read it. McKiernan creates a stunning fantasy tale, in the traditions of Tolkien and Brooks, but unique by its own. The characters are likable, the plot is interesting - classic fantasy struggle againts a merciless Dark Lord - and the worlds is as rich and beautiful as Tolkien's Middle earth, Brooks'Four Lands or Forgotten Realms. I'm very happy that I have discovered this book - for I knew once more the pleasure of beginning reading a great fantasy tale.'

Shadows of Doom

I just have to agree with Mad Monica, and all the wee folk we've had the grace to know. How can anyone say ill of the beauty of a book honoring Tolkien, and doing it well? I'd like to see you try to do it! McKiernan has his own style, and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the stories he's written. As for Tolkien's lawyers; aren't they dead? Besides, they might like a good read, themselves. Any book with Elves, Men, Dwarves and wee folk makes me smile, and this one was good enough for applause. You got my vote, Dennis. Just get another artist.
