Still worth reading

Norm Mindel (alias Norbert M. Mindel) wrote this book in 2005 to provide more explanation and background about his investment philosophy than marketing materials alone could ever provide. When you write a book, you can explain at greater length and provide details and examples. You can even include jokes. This book delivers on the promise in its title, to be "The Intelligent Guide to Your Financial Future." Anyone can understand and laugh at the examples he provides of popular media hype about investments or the predictions that turned out to be 180 degrees wrong. Other parts of the material require you to pay attention, even though the examples and illustrations are helpful. Within the context of the world Norm was part of at that time, it achieved quite some success. Many of the advisers he worked with at the time found it useful in their work with clients, and many of Norm's clients told him that it gave them deeper insight into his investment philosophy and the whole world of passive investing that he believed in. But Norm wanted to write a book that was longer and more inclusive. Furthermore, I told him that he should start his new book with a robust section on how his life experiences--and the advisory business he co-founded--affected the development of his investment philosophy. The book that resulted, "Wealth Management in the New Economy," is that extremely rare kind of book on wealth and financial management: one you can actually read. Publication is scheduled for February 2010. But this book still provides an introduction to the world of passive investing based on the academic research of the last 50 years, as well as an introduction to other aspects of wealth management, such as asset protection. It is still eminently worth reading. If you have never encountered this kind of investing before, do yourself a favor and buy--and read--this book. Norm's coauthors are Marcus Heinrich and David Strulowitz, and they were all assisted by editor Steve Percifield. --Sarah E. Sleight, co-author of "Wealth Management in the New Economy"
