Shils's book is a great introduction to the sociology of intellectuals. After you read it, you must read Alvin Gouldner's The Future of Intellectuals and the Rise of the New Class, volume 2 of his Darkside of the Dialectic trilogy. In it, Gouldner gives the best analysis of Shils's view on intellectuals. The only thing, as Gouldner himself points out, that Shils fails to elaborate upon is the cunning and ambition of intellectuals. Intellectuals are not silly absent-minded professor types (although that makes for a great disguise) They are very, very dangerous.
