FLASHBACKS? COULDN'T FIND ANY ---

Sam Burke, in his early forties, was a burned-out profiler, now teaching in Quantico. Due to his past and loss of a child, his only son, Jonathan he was in an emitional burn-out. Sergeant Abby Cross, 27, has stayed in Eden because of the loss of her neice, Sadie, ten years ago. She has dreams of becoming a profiler with the FBI, but has stayed for her sister, Naomi. Abby has a gut feeling that the disappearance of Emily Campbell is somehow linked to Sadie's disapperance ten years ago. Then three days later Sara Beth Brodie disappears. Something just isn't right with this one. The mystery escalates with the involvemnt of Lois Sheridan, the director of Fairhaven Academy - Luanne Plimpton, secretary to Curtis Brodie and Bobby Lee Hooker, who has just served ten years in prison for kidnapping. Oh, and Vickie Wilder, who disappears. In dealing with follow-up tips Abby takes Sam along with her to a bayou where Hooker's younger brother deals in snakes. Spooky! Lieutenant Dave Conyers has been helpful in giving tips to Abby. Is he interested in her? Luanne is in deep trouble when Curtis Brodie finds out that she has been married before. The romance is subtle but why would a girl who has been holding herself off from involvements because of what happened to her mother and grandmother [their men all left them] and get so emotionally wound-up to hop in bed with someone she knows isn't going to stick around? Idiot! I give it 4 and 1/2 stars as I tend to like more mystery with my romances and not so much blatant hankey pankey that nothing holds the story together but the bed. Sam and Abby have problems but [finally] they work them out. Recommended --M -- Should be a decent [mystery wise] trilogy.

Fantastic book

Amanda Stevens is my favorite Intrigue writer. Her books, including THE INNOCENT, have everything--action, romance, suspense... My only complaint is that I hate to put them down when it's time to stop reading and start cooking. In this book, Abby Cross is the perfect heroine. She's strong, yet has her weaknesses--in other words, she's a real person. The hero is a perfect foil for her. I thought the romance sizzled!!!

I loved this book!

Contrary to what one of the reviews says about this book, it has no flashbacks. Did we read the same book? What it does have is a gripping mystery and an emotional love story. Powerful stuff.

A Great Read

This story has everything I love in a romantic suspense--a compelling plot and deep, complex characters. When two little girls are kidnapped from a small town in Mississippi, Sgt. Abby Cross is convinced they're looking for two different suspects. She does believe, however, that one of the kidnappings is tied to the disappearance of another little girl ten years ago--Abby's own niece. When ex-FBI profiler Sam Burke arrives in town to help with the case, Abby soon realizes that Sam is a very complicated man with a few secrets of his own. The way they interact with one another--two lonely souls seeking solace from a very grim case--is both touching and realistic. I loved them both. THE INNOCENT is a romance, to be sure, but also a very gritty suspense. I can't wait for the next book in the Eden's Children series.
