Intelligence and Humor

I remember loving this book when I read it as a teenager. An English professor finds an umbrella in a junk shop, and when he opens it he is transported into the worlds of fiction. Imagine encountering Frankenstein's monster, or trying to get out of Flatland. Or trying to figure your way out of a world of Gilbert and Sullivan. It's a real hoot and a fun read. Lots of references to literature, though, so if you aren't well read, you may not get all the allusions, but when you do, you feel SO intelligent! The sequel, The Amorous Umbrella, is the same teacher using the umbrella to find the perfect woman. He searches through Fairytales, Shakespeare and even Soap Operas. Good combination of intelligence and humor.
