Book Overview

Asa Mercer left his Eastern home to go West. He became the first President of the University of Washington and eventually immigration officer for the Washington Territory tasked with the job of recruiting women from the East Coast to move to Seattle. Known as the "Mercer Girls", these women married, bore children, and infused themselves into the life and creation of Seattle and Puget Sound. The biggest test of his life, courage, and honor would take place in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Caught in the middle of wealthy cattle barons and a range war, Mercer reported the trials and tribulations of the open plains where problems were still settled with a gun and those who had the most land, won.
