Book Overview

Matt Slaughter and Ike Brister barely survive a clash with the Sioux-led by the dreaded Iron Claw. Back at Fort Laramie, Matt and Ike sign up as cavalry scouts, just as Iron Claw declares war on all whites. And when Matt's girl is taken captive, a bloody showdown with Iron Claw is inevitable, beyond the mountains Matt and Ike fled for dear life-in a valley called Little Bighorn.

BOSEMAN TRAIL LAKOTA (SIOUX) ON THE WARPATH!

I have hundreds of westerns in my library, but this is the first book by this author I've read. But it will not be the last, in fact I've the first volume in this Matt Slaughter series, OUTLAW, on order. The book under review here takes place near the Boseman Trail that is called 'Theives Road' by the Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe who do not at all appreciate that their hunting lands are being invaded by whites passing through this Indian area on the way to the Dakota-Montana goldfields. The year 1874 had seen George Custer spread rumors of gold aplenty in these areas, and in this year of 1876, the Lakota want all whites out of their area, even at the expense of war. Slaughter is on the dodge, but has cast his fate as scout at $25.00 a month with the cavalry working out of Fort Laramie. Some of Lakota (Sioux) and other tribes are coming to Fort Laramie for a series of peace talks, while many of their cohorts are painted for war, avoiding these talks while continuing to attack white interlopers on the Bozeman Trail. All army patrols are living on the edge and almost under seige no matter where they ride. As page 277 states: "The Powder River country was going to be bloody". Weaving history with fiction backed up by a smooth style of writing allows the reader to enjoy this taunt tale set in the 'west'. All the structural elements of an intriguing western are in place; and you just don't want to miss it. I cannot say enough good things about this story, it tells a good yarn as every western should, and any reader of westerns will no doubt find it exceptional. Well recommended for a few night's good reading. Semper Fi.
