Emotional Intelligence Scores a Direct Hit

When people work together, when there is a manager and those that are "managed," problems abound. The scenerio is as old as the industrial revolution. The problem is, the solution to people working together harmoniously and productively is not intellectual - it's relational. Work is about relationships and perceptions; interpersonal behavior, the interactions between leaders and subordinates, is ground zero for everthing else that happens at work. Dr. Hurst does a remarkable job of leading us through an emotional learning experience; he clarifies the real nature of "people problems" at work and reveals the true solutions to those problems. This is not an academic lecture about how things are supposed to be, but and emotional journey of self-awareness and revelation. The characters and context of this learning adventure is far more impactful than any recent book on management that I have read. This is no abstract analytical textbook; it is an experiential opiate for organizational angst. I am requiring everyone on my management staff to read this book, and we are discussing the content in relation to the issues that confront us on an everyday basis. Business is life from 9 to 5, and we are trying to use this book to make life better for all of us. A strong recommendation.

The Hit Man

I picked up this book at a conference and read it on the plane ride home. Now mind you, the plane was delayed leaving by almost 2 hours, I was tired after three days of the conference (and sitting), I had to use my reading glasses because my eyes were so tired and I was sitting next to a complaining woman who didn't quite fit in her seat...............WOW, the book really held my attention and was a great way to wrap up the learning that had occured during the conference. I really appreciated how it flowed and taught so much in so few words. I can imagine that it was a great deal of distillation for the author. The book tells a great message about change in business and how it might be approached. A definite recommendation!!!
