A good, concise review of the at-times troublesome papacy.

Although a very brief book, I found it to be just enough "overview" information to pique my interest in some more specific topics surrounding the history of the Papacy.

An excellently succinct but beautifully descriptive history

With his typical wit and veuve, Allan Hall has mastered the intricate workings of the Vatican in a way that others can only envy. At times lyrical, this potted tour d'horizon will be invaluable to students of papal history and must become the standard text for a future generation.

Excellent, informative and well written

A book which I found contained new and insightful facts about the papacy and the Roman Catholic Church through the ages. Hall writes in an informed and authorititive manner, clearly comfortable with his subject. I particularly liked the chapters concerning the papacy and the extermination of the Jews in the Second World War; an episode which does not reflect much credit on the church or its hierachy. I reccommend this book to anyone interested in history, in religion or just for a thumping good read about one of the world's dominant forces. end.
