More for the railfan than the rail tourist, the well-documented HISTORY OF CANADIAN RAILROADS (1985, hardcover, 160 pp.) manages to pack in a wealth of detail in its relatively short length. The book does worst on pretty pictures -- don't expect to see Morant's Curve, Craigellachie or publicity stills of grinning travellers in CN or CP trains (there is a midbook color section, though). What it does best is B&W photos of steam locomotives, some in action, some merely "posing" horizontally; and descriptions of the various, now mostly defunct, smaller Canadian rail companies. Provided the reader is willing to forego a good deal of atmosphere, he or she will be rewarded with intelligent prose, understandable history, and a genuine feel for the love of railroading. If this book were a little newer I'd have given it five stars, flat. Good show, Mr. McDonnell!
