Hippy Survival Guide

The Hippy Survival Guide to Y2K by Mike Oehler is the second most useful book about individual preparedness that I have read. This book has so much useful information in it that even though it was written with Y2K in mind, it is still a must have for your survival/self-reliance library. While the world's electronics did not come to a silent halt and civilization did not become as chaotic as some feared at the turn of the century, our economy has taken a downturn, but the information in this book will help you eat and stay warm with a roof over your head and do so for cheap The federal government cannot bail out the "little people" like they have been for the mega corporations, but we can all bail ourselves out by preparing for any more hardtimes to come. One nice thing about the title of this book is that since Y2K has come and gone without the mess predicted by some, you can get this book and others like it for less than the "more current" books out there. If you can get a copy, this is one worth having. To see my first choice book for individual/family preparedness check out my other book reviews. (Hint-It's another Y2K book)

Eye-opening but still interesting to read

I was ready to dust off the whole Y2K thing as just another media-inflated non-event. The best thing about The Hippy Survival Guide is the first half of the book in which the author convincingly makes the case that there are indeed big problems pending. He does this in a narrative of his own experiences in trying to wake up his small town to the possible problems that may come on Jan. 1. (Incredibly, he manages to make this amusing.) The balance of the book contains excellent information on self-sufficient living (wrought from his years living a back-to-the-land lifestyle) plus appendices for more information. If you are a skeptic about the whole Y2K thing, you should read this book. Even if you're not convinced at the end of it, you'll have fun reading it.

One of the best (and definitely the most fun) books on Y2K

Really I'd give this one four-and-a-half stars if this review form would let me... but I decided to "round up." I like the way the author used a first-person narrative to tell his own experiences of a year-long period to discuss and explore the possible consequences of the Y2K bug. He does a good job of making the case for possible severe disruptions and the need to take some practical measures to be prepared. Lots of good information on how to prepare, plus an excellent appendix of resources for more information, websites, books, food and homesteading supplies. Oehler sounds to be a real "back to the land hippy" who has been living a self-sufficient life since the 60s. His humor and philosophy towards society (although I did not buy off on all of it) are what make the book fun to read.

Well-researched,what may happen; authoritative, what to do.

The book grabbed me from the introduction on. Self-sufficient homesteader hippy sans television and computer opens a piece of mail that alerts him to potential world-wide collapse of electronic-based civilization. He thoroughly researches the question, adds solid suggestions for urban, suburban and rural survival(which work in any emergency), caps it with his own philosophy about the survival of mankind. It may be the most important book I've read, not to mention the most gripping. Randi Somers, Homer Alaska
