Different and interesting

A very interesting read, similar in style to Peretti and Dekker's styles of Christian fiction. Not sure how Biblically sound the doctrine is, but it was a good read. I was very disappointed when I got to the very end of the book and found a full page totally blank. Had to go borrow the book from the library to read the missing page.

the hidden

This is the first book that I read by this author. It was so suspenseful that I finished it in one night and ordered every other book that she ever wrote. There were not too many yet but I am looking forward to all of her future books.

I'm so glad I found this author

Kathryn Mackel is a highly talented Christian writer. Not since Frank Peretti have I found a writer that draws me in with chills, thrills and the power of Christ. Over the past month I have been able to get a hold of all of her published books and have quickly devoured them in the space of a night. The Hidden is another one of her books that I simply could not put down. I spent quite a bit of the beginning of this novel not like Dr. Susan Stone very much but as Mackel developed her character I was more and more moved by her struggles. In fact, I didn't care for many of the characters in the beginning of the story but as their depths were exposed I had a greater understanding of why they behaved the way they did. And this made all the difference. For people who love to be on the edge of their seats while reading a novel with a Christian world view - I highly recommend picking up a copy of any Kathry Mackel book. The Hidden is a good start because it's a stand alone novel. Give it a try!

Worth your time

In The Hidden, Kathryn Mackel weaves a memorable tale of forgiveness and reconciliation. Of course, the message is housed in her typical gripping, suspenseful style which makes it all the better. Mackel has a way with forming characters and developing a story, easing it out a little at a time, keeping the pages turning. And it seems to be done so effortlessly. I recommend this book; it's well worth the time and, as with Mackel's other books, will challenge you spiritually as well.

THE HIDDEN Gem of Supernatural Suspense

What a powerhouse of a book! With a gripping plot, dealing realistic problems to realistic characters, THE HIDDEN engaged me quickly and held on mercilessly. Visual descriptive passages transfixed me, and the supernatural visions were other-worldly but lucid. Mackel's characters' voices seemed both natural and unique, with the evil, "Other" character giving me the willies.

Unique and Dependable

Mackel has quickly established herself as a writer of depth and suspense. Her first two novels combined original premises with supernatural/spiritual flavors, and they flowed nicely with the depth of her characters. "The Hidden" uses the same ingredients, but lets them simmer a bit longer before boiling over with unique ideas, tension, and a surprise or two. This time around, Mackel takes readers into small-town Colorado, where gruesome deaths become linked with the lives of a family and the young man they find chained in a ravine. Each character has depth and motives that become clearer as the story goes along. Readers might think the path is leading in a straight-ahead fashion, but it starts to twist and turn. The spiritual ideas are developed well, and the final pages bring satisfaction in unexpected ways. If you like tightly-wound stories that still manage to develop memorable characters and thought-provoking themes, "The Hidden" is one you'll want to read. I hope to see more from Mackel. She's never the same, but she's always dependable. I like that in a writer.
