The murderous first chapter sets a portentious and foreboding pale on this story of a suburban San Diego neighborhood that is turned upside down when a Rushkin Marsh, a porsche-driving, Marquis de Sade--loving lawyer moves in with his beautiful wife, Sybil. Rushkin is one of the most compelling characters i have ever met and his effect on Charles Ripley, the narator of the tale, makes for great reading. This book is generally classified as "horror," but it is about much more than that---it challenges our ideas of social conventions, masculine ideals, and what makes "the happy man." Hard to find, but highly recommended.
