Good resource, missing CD

My guitar teacher and I both like this book. I have been playing guitar for over a year and consider myself to be an experienced beginner. The book covers a lot of material at a beginner/intermediate level. I think it will help me deepen my skills. I like that it has parts of familiar songs and some complete songs with tabs and regular musical notation. It also includes a play along cd feature that would be very beneficial except that my book didn’t have one. 😟 The cover says that there is supposed to be a cd inside but, alas and alack, there wasn’t one. I still think it’s a very good resource for aspiring guitarists.

Great beginner book

I received my guitar lesson book within just a few days from placing my order. I have been doing the small practices it introduces and I am beginning to feel a bit better about playing and not making a fool of myself. This is the first time I have put this much effort into learning to play guitar and it is fun. The book is very informative and takes steps to ensure you feel comfortable with yourself and your guitar.

**READ BEFORE BUYING THIS BOOK!!!This book is a SUPPLEMENT not a COMPLETE COURSE!!**

I am writing this review of this book because i see alot of reviews decrying it because it isn't for beginners.this book is a SUPPLEMENT to the Hal Leonard guitar method which IS for beginners(it even says so on the cover!)this means that it isn't a stand alone course of study, it's meant to be studied in CONJUNCTION WITH the Hal leonard guitar method course which is excellent.i suggest studying the hal leonard guitar method books 1-3 or the complete edition with books 1-3 in one volume first, THEN this book to get best results.

USER FRIENDLY

USER FRIENDLY That about says it all. I got this guide with lessons to be self taught, before I decided to enter a Guitar beginners class at the local college. Found out later that the instructor was using a Hal Leonard instruction book too. It IS an outstanding source for anyone interested in learning how to play guitar beyond by ear. Don't need to know how to read music, it teaches you at your pace, and with the number of notes and chords applied to Guitar(s) (Acoustic, Classical, or Electric) One thing I've learned in the short time I've been practicing. If you are interested in learning to play an electric guitar, than I'd suggest getting both an inexpensive starter acoustic and an electric (or in that order). Why? The strings on an acoustic guitar require more finger strength than an electric, especially for beginners. If you master or are comfortable with the steel or classical strings of an acoustic YOU will be much better and easier to apply what you've learned to an electric guitar.

Not bad, but not detailed enough

Down-to-earth advice and a practical approach with real-song examples. These examples remind you that you're not dealing with the same old dull practices without even knowing what they're gonna be used for. Anyway the book remains pretty general, skipping fine details. If you're want to know how to play songs, check it out. However, I recommend The Complete Guitar method (vol 1,2,3) by Russ Shipton, which I find much more practical and detailed than this.

For the Advancing Beginner

One thing to note with this book is right on the cover it says "supplement to Any Guitar Method". This is a book for someone who has learned the very basics and wants to see how all those chords, scales and strumming patterns apply to real music. It does assume a basic level of competence with the guitar. If you are brand new to the guitar, get this book in 6 months or so. While browsing through the guitar section at a local bookstore, this book caught my eye because it shows real world examples of the techniques I've been currently practicing. Again this is not for the beginner nor is it intended to be. But if you have the basics down and want to push your guitar playing to the next level this book will certainly get you there.
