Excellent, but mostly for beginners

I haven't finished reading this one yet-- it just arrived today. I must say I'm a little disappointed that I'm not seeing much new information, but if I have to recommend a book to a novice, then this would be it. If you are contemplating buying (or have already bought) your first pistol, then this book will be a valuable resource. Likewise, if you have a CCW but not much training, this is a great place to start. While the author has some clear biases, he approaches his subject in a very objective manner. This isn't just a gun book, but a very practical and realistic guide to personal safety. For those of you who have already mastered the basics, graduate to Massad Ayoob's books.

Excellent advice and a lot of it.

I read the negative comments on this book and agree it needs an index and table of contents. But the comments that the information is old and that Campbell recommends outdated weapons is not true. There are at least two schools of thought when it comes to defensive handguns, modern double action designs or single action models that have been proven over many generations. The author prefers the 1911 45ACP and Browning Hi-Power 9mm which are old designs but are as effective today as ever. Both camps get passionate over which is best and berate the opposition when the truth is the best examples from each side are fine defensive choices. Campbell explains the differences and why he likes tried and true. I agree with him. As far as long guns, younger readers aren't likely to object to his choices. And he covers defensive tactics well. Lots of excellent information here that can save your life. Highly recommended. I would recommend reading Mas Ayoob's fine Gun Digest book as well.

Knowledge for concealed carry users and those for self preservation.

This book is a guide for those that do not have time for personal training like me. I have too many obligations at this point but would love to attend one of the training schools. But for now, I purchase books and read up on the art of self defense. Maybe after retiring, I can persue other avenues. This book is a must read.
