Book Overview

As we seek more natural alternatives to harsh synthetic products, we are learning a new and healthy respect for the traditional wisdom our ancestors took for granted. Women are rediscovering their foremothers' "green witchcraft"--the use of flowers, leaves, berries, roots, and barks in home and garden, for hygiene and beauty, for pleasure and for health. Now, that lore may be found in this modern source book of the domestic use of herbs. Full of practical...

One of my favorites

Herbal useful information that can be used from holistic remedies to spiritual meaning.

Great reference

I love this book! It has all sorts of natural ways to address things like insect repellants, disinfectants, and potpourri. (I especially liked the one on moths since I keep bird seed in the basement and wanted to repel moths that get in there). It also has a section on spices and herbs that talks to the origins of the different herbs/plants and how to use them. There's a nice section on teas and plants to use in teas. The section on "Beauty Care" has hair care, baths, foot care etc. There are recipes throughout - woven into the descriptions/discussions of the plants etc but in addition to there's lots of info about the plants and what they can be used for, how to use them. Then you can concoct the potion (or salad as the case may be) on your own too. Its an interesting book with lots of information.

Great- Great Grandma taught us this!

This is a wonderful book. In reality, it is a combination of all the "folk" magic passed through families for generations. I have used many, many of the recipies, and ideas in the book. Thanks Barbara and Barbara for all your research!!~blessings )O( moonlight to all~

Good info

I would give this book five stars for the info and three for the layout. The herbal remedies discussed here are very useful, starting with the info on what herbs to use for cleaning your house and what kind of indoor plants to use to purify the air you're breathing. The herbal remedies on skin care and several health issues can be found in most herbal books. However, I thought that the chapter about cleansing was very interesting, as it leads to a cure (prevention, actually) for the common cold.A note: Despite the title, and although it's written by a witch, spellcrafting is not discussed in this book. At least not in the usual way...

Absolutely Great!

I love herbs! All too often humans have turned to artificial means to keep the self happy. Personally, I think this fear of using natural means of healing stems from a fear of the earth and its associations of powers with the "devil." We've forgotten that the Earth is here to heal us too, a gift from God (or Goddess) to take care of us as we take care of the earth. The use of artificial chemicals to keep ourselves healthy has taken us away from the balance of man and nature and we are slowly destroying the greatest gift of all- our lives- through destroying the Earth. I've often wondered about the plants in my mother's ("jungle") garden. Now at the very least the useless weeds have a purpose. Bravo! I wish there was a broader advertisement regarding this book!
